High School Achievements

This week’s High School achievements…                                               

Monday 30th August

 

MUSIC EISTEDDFOD

Congratulations to all the individual instrumentalists that participated in the 2010 Music Eisteddfod – all did exceptionally well.

The Epworth Senior and Intermediate Marimba Bands and the Dance Band also did exceptionally well – they all received an A+ (Gold). Congratulations to these musicians!

Nonji Ndwandwe and the Dance Band were honoured to be asked to participate in the “Best of the Eisteddfod” Concert.

DEBATING CHAMPIONS

Congratulations to the Epworth Grade 8 Debating Team who won the KZN Schools Debating Finals, beating teams from Durban and Phoenix in a provincial tournament recently.
They debated banning Facebook, and the right to search pupils in the school. Well done to the team – Lauren Beghin, Hayley Martin and Christine Colenbrander.  Christine was awarded the Best Grade 8 Speaker of the day!
 
KZN BASKETBALL

Congratulations to Naledi Rantai and Lysandra Shabalala who have been selected to represent the KZN U16 Basketball Team – well done!
 
KZN EQUESTRIAN

Congratulations to Kelly Martin who has been chosen to represent KZN in the SANEF Schools 1.20m class. She will be competing against other provinces later in September.

MIDLANDS SQUASH

The Midlands Ladies Squash Team (consisting of Julie Lee, Tarryn Harborth and Epworthians Maxine Windelberg, Stacey Bone and Courtney Bone) won the B section of the Senior Inter-Provincial Tournament. They beat Eastern Province 4 – 1. 

Monday 2nd August

MARIMBA COMPETITION

Congratulations to the Marimba girls that travelled to Boksburg recently to take part in the National Marimba Festival. The Epworth team did exceptionally well to win the Best Newcomer Trophy and the Best High School Marimba Band Trophy. Well done! 

EISTEDDFOD

Well done to all the Choir girls for receiving an A at the Pietermaritzburg Eisteddfod.

MIDLANDS BASKETBALL

Congratulations to the following girls who have been selected for the Midlands Basketball Team:
Lysandra Shabalala, Sibulele Tom and Naledi Rantai. Well done girls!

DEBATING

On Wednesday evening, Epworth 1 and Epworth 2 debated against each other (after defeating 22 other Grade 8 teams in the Pietermaritzburg league). Epworth 2 won the debate, with Hayley Martin being awarded Best Speaker. Hayley, together with team mates Christine Colenbrander and Lauren Beghin, will now compete for the KZN title against the other Grade 8 leagues on 14th August, in an all-day round-robin tournament.
At the prizegiving, the following Epworth debaters were awarded amongst the best speakers in the Pietermaritzburg Leagues:
Chenise Govender –  3rd in the Senior League
Emilie du Trevou – 1st in the Junior League
Maeve Fourie – 2nd in the Junior League
Caroline Dickson – 3rd in the Grade 8 League.
Well done to all the debaters – this is a wonderful achievement.

ROYAL SCHOOLS OF MUSIC ACHIEVEMENTS

Congratulations to the following girls on their achievements in the recent Royal Schools of Music examinations: Aileen Thompson (Grade 5 Theory) and Monica Beghin (Grade 3 Harp) – Well done.

SA SCHOOLS HOCKEY

Congratulations to Heather McEwan (U16) and Amy Greaves (U17) for being selected for the SA Schools Hockey Squads. Well Done!

SA SQUASH RANKINGS

Monday 7th June

BURSARY WINNER

Congratulations to Chenise Govender who has been awarded a 100% Bursary to study Chemical Engineering at UCT from next year. This is an outstanding achievement awarded through Sasol SA. Well done Chenise, we are very proud of you!

EPWORTH WINS SA CANOE SPRINTS – AGAIN!

Our Epworth Canoeing team has won the South African Canoeing Sprint Championships for a record 5th year in a row! What an outstanding achievement!

SA NATIONAL SQUASH TOURNAMENT

Well done to our girls who played in the SA National Squash tournament in PE last weekend. This is a South African selection tournament and all the top players in each age group are invited.
Julie Lee had to unfortunately withdraw halfway through – but she still did well enough to come 8th in the U19 section.
Bronni Smithers played very well to come 3rd in the U16 section, with Cayleigh Conradie 6th and Nadia Ramchandra  and Lisa Truter in the top 10.
Kimberley McDonald beat some seeded players to finish 6th in the U14 section and Kristi Conradie also made it into the top 10.

MIDLANDS NETBALL

Congratulations to Mbali Mtandela who has been selected to represent the Midlands U17 Netball Team.
