DEBATING REPORT – FINALS

The Finals of the PMB Debating League were held at Varsity College last Wednesday evening. As previously reported, Epworth had one team in each league – so everyone was on tenterhooks!

Our Grade 8s debated that women who kill their abusive husbands should not go to jail – a very controversial topic indeed! TWC were their opposition and Bethany, Kate and Laurian won the debate, bringing home the PMB title for the fourth year in a row!

Caroline, Hayley and Christine took on an experienced Grade 10 Junior team from GHS in an argument about abolishing the minimum wage in South Africa. Epworth proved that it should not be abolished, thereby winning the Junior League! Another trophy for the cabinet!

Derisa, Emilie and Kiyarah and their GHS opposition were given their topic an hour before the debate and they argued about whose responsibility it was to punish Julius Malema (should he need punishment at all!). It was a very good debate, with strong arguments on both sides, but in the end GHS won. Epworth is therefore the runner-up in this very competitive Senior League – no mean feat!

In summary for 2011, Epworth won the Grade 8 League (out of 22 teams), the Junior League (out of 26 teams) and came second in the Senior League (out of 18 teams). This is an amazing achievement for our debaters across the board and they must all be congratulated for their dedication and tenacity! The coaches must also be thanked for their input – Denbigh Maurer, Anne Holloway and Marion Kroukam.

ATHLETICS:

Results from the Michaelhouse meeting held on Saturday –

DEBATING REPORT – SEMI FINALS

The Semi-Finals of the PMB Debating League were held at Epworth last Wednesday evening. Epworth had one team in each league – so the tension was palpable!

Bethany Damonse, Kate Graham and Laurian Polkinghorne in Grade 8 debated against GHS about political protest songs and they did very well to win, but the Best Speaker went to a GHS debater.

Our Juniors, Caroline Dickson, Christine Colenbrander and Hayley Martin, argued in a tough contest against Maritzburg College. They debated about the cultural practice of Lobola and won, but the Best Speaker also went to the other team!

In the Senior section, Derisa Govender, Kiyarah Pillay and Naadhira Mahomed debated extremely well to beat a very competitive Hilton College team who, now in Matric, have been in the Finals every year since their Grade 8 year! Epworth won the argument about compulsory community service for teachers, explaining why South Africa needs this.

Thus, another first for Epworth debating – a team in each league for the Finals on 10th August – watch this space!

PUBLIC SPEAKING REPORT

On Sunday, 24 July, Mbali Matandela, Qondiswa James, Maeve Fourie and Derisa Govender participated in the annual KZN Public Speaking and Debating Championships which were held at Maritzburg College.  Each participant had to deliver an 8-minute prepared speech (either an after-dinner speech or a persuasive speech), an 8-minute prepared reading and a 3 minute impromptu oral.  They also had to team up with someone from another school and participate in a 9 minute debate.  All four of our girls spoke beautifully, obtaining excellent results, including distinctions, in the various categories.  Well done!

MUSIC

The Choir, Chamber Choir, Symphonic Band, String Group and Senior Marimba Band all had the fantastic opportunity to perform at the Botanical Gardens this weekend. As the only school to have such a thorough representation of their music department, they really excelled and received many compliments on the standard of their performances.
The stage and sound were manned by professionals, “Big Beat Organisers”, and as such, we were able to enjoy a professional performance!
Well done girls, your hard work and practice paid off!

DEBATING REPORT – QUARTER FINALS – ALL LEAGUES

Name of Team Opponent Result Best Speaker
Senior Epworth 1 College 1 Won
Junior Epworth 1 Hilton 1 Won Christine Colenbrander (2nd time)
Grade 8 Epworth 1 St Charles Won

Quarter Finals of the respective leagues were held last Thursday and were filled with controversies! The Grade 8’s debated about legalising marijuana in South Africa and our girls proved that we should. The Juniors argued about abolishing home schooling and many controversial opinions were expressed. The Senior debate was about the issue of banning customary circumcision, which was a contentious issue indeed! All our teams won, but only Christine was awarded Best Speaker, with debaters on the other teams getting the Best Speaker awards. Well done to our debaters, they continue to do Epworth proud, and will contest the Semi-Finals early next term!

Last Sunday saw Mrs Kroukam accompanying our top Senior debaters, Emilie du Trevou, Naadhira Mahomed and Kiyarah Pillay to a KZN Interleague Top Speakers’ tournament held at Wartburg. They debate in mixed teams with other leagues and these tournaments are always good learning curves for team work and general knowledge. All three debaters did well, with Emilie’s team coming second out of twelve, and she came second in the speaker rankings. This is excellent, as the standard in the five leagues is very high with some SA ranked speakers participating – well done, Emilie!

EARTH ACTIVE

Last Wednesday, two Earth Active teams went to GHS to participate in the Environmental Quiz.  Our first team can 3rd overall and our second team was placed 6th.  Congratulations to both teams!

EQUESTRIAN EVENT

The 2nd Schools Equestrian Qualifier Show took place on the weekend of the 26 and 27th February at Calderhall Equestrian Centre in Merrivale.  Four Epworth riders took part:  Camilla Pennefather, Kirsty Cook, Hayley Martin and Kelly Martin.

Camilla Pennefather and her horse El Camino participated in Showing, Equitation and Jumping classes and were placed 6th in Equitation discipline and earned a total of 367 points for Epworth.

Hayley Martin and her horse, Ahsan Che’ participated in a Showing class, Equitation and Jumping classes and earned 276 points for Epworth.

Kelly Martin and her horse, Brandenburg Lady of the Rings participated in Jumping and were placed 1st in their class, earning 100 points for Epworth.

Kirsty Cook … a very special mention must be made to this remarkable young lady.  Amidst her heartache for having lost her horse, Pinero, to colic, a few days prior to this show, Kirsty’s positive attitude and happy disposition over this weekend was highly commendable.  Kirsty’s riding instructor kindly loaned her a horse called Mix and Match so that she was able to participate in this show.  Kirsty did extremely well, especially considering she rode this horse for the first time, and was placed 4th in a Jumping class and 2nd in Equitation, earning a total of 196 points for Epworth.

DEBATING REPORT – ROUND 3 – ALL LEAGUES

Name of Team Opponent Result Best Speaker
Senior Epworth 1 Hilton 1 Lost
Senior Epworth 2 Carter Lost
Junior Epworth 1 St John’s 1 Won Christine Colenbrander
Junior Epworth 2 Alex 3 Lost
Grade 8 Epworth 1 GHS 2 Won Elena Maier
Grade 8 Epworth 2 MCS Lost

Round 3 of the Junior and Senior Leagues in the welcome cooler air at Hilton saw the Seniors tackling negotiations with terrorists and the Juniors debating whether overweight people should pay more on flights. This revealed some controversial points of view! Christine did very well in that she stepped into the team at lunchtime on the day of the debate due to another team member being ill, and still got Best Speaker – well done, Christine! This also showed excellent team work because the notes were already organised and done for her by the absent debater!

The Grade 8s took on the challenge of teaching Apartheid History as a compulsory subject until Grade 12 and they lost one and won one. Elena did well to set up Epworth’s case and was awarded Best Speaker for that.

Another mixed bag of results in the three leagues, and so we will see what Round 4 brings next week!

PUBLIC SPEAKING

On Monday, 14 March 2011, Epworth participated in the annual Rotary Team Speaking Competition, which was held at Russell High School.  Our team consisted of Qondiswa James, Mbali Matandela and Zime Shabalala. Each team had to focus on a problem within society and suggest possible solutions to that problem. Our team spoke about the way the media influences society’s perception of the “perfect” male. The team spoke with passion and humour and they were selected as the winners of the Pietermaritzburg round of the competition. Unfortunately, they will not be able to participate in the Finals which are being held in Durban on the 23 March. This is because two of the team members are in the cast of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, which is being performed next week. Our congratulations go to all three members of the team for their excellent speeches.

Round 2 saw some tough debates with only 3 wins and 2 Best Speakers.

The Seniors debated banning the Burqa and some very interesting theories were heard from all sides! Emilie and Qondiswa received very well-deserved Best Speaker awards – well done.

The Juniors debated English as the medium of instruction in all South African schools but their opposition managed to outsmart them. For some of our juniors, this was the first debate they have ever lost – it’s tough at the top!

Grade 8s also tackled the education curriculum and decided whether Apartheid History should be a compulsory subject until Grade 12. It was a close debate for Epworth 1and they did well to win, unfortunately they did not receive a Best Speaker award.

Good luck for Round 3 this coming week!
