Term 3 2011
CROSS COUNTRY
Well done to Cana Peek who made the KZN Cross country team. She has been selected to run at Nationals at the end of the month in Limpopo.
MUSIC – 2011 PMB AND MIDLANDS EISTEDDFOD
Congratulations to all the children who participated in the 2011 Pietermaritzburg and Midlands Eisteddfod.
Everyone performed beautifully – we are very proud of our pupils who show so much talent and dedication.
Alani Ferreira and Shaniae Maharaj played at a prestigious concert at Howard College (UKZN) in Durban on Sunday afternoon – the standard was very high, and they said it was a very lovely experience. They played on the beautiful University grand piano.
Congratulations to the Senior Choir for their wonderful performance and achieving an A+. This is a fantastic achievement!
WORLD KNOWLEDGE OLYMPIAD
Fifty nine of our Grade 6 and 7 pupils entered the Word Knowledge Olympiad this year. Many of the children were considered to have a good general knowledge.
However, the following pupils need special mention: Stephen Southway and Hannah Acutt were considered to have excellent general knowledge; Aiden Whitelaw, Cameron Gemmell, Anna Hollmann, Shaniae Maharaj, Jonathan Bertram, Sayug Moodley, Thomas Southway, Joey Khan, Maxine Seethal, Owen Sithole, Brittany Gemmell, Emily Germishuizen, Tristan Hadden and Simon Krone achieved a very good level of general knowledge.
Congratulations to everyone who participated.
GYMNASTICS – PROVINCIAL COMPETITION
Our congratulations go to Shura Johnsen who participated in the Provincial Invitational Competition in Durban recently.
She achieved a gold medal for Level 4 in the 12 and under age group.

CANOEING – KZN PADDLERS
Epworth is so proud of all our KZN Marathon paddlers who paddled during the weekend. James Horner, Cana Peek, Cade White, Amy Peckett and Riley van Rooyen represented KZN and looked so smart in their black and white shirts.

Medal winners:
U14
Cana placed 3rd in the S.A. Singles event and 1st in the S.A. Doubles event.
U12
James Horner received a gold medal.
U10
Amy Peckett received a silver medal.
GYMNASTICS – SA COMPETITION
Michaela Sandalls (Level 1) and Helen Kroukam (Level 3) competed in the South African Central Zone Gymnastics competition in Bloemfontein at the end of June. They competed against gymnasts from 6 different provinces.
Congratulations to Michaela who qualified for the KZN team by achieving Gold medals in the pre-qualifying competitions and Helen who won all 3 prelims, as well as the KZN competition. In Bloemfontein, Michaela earned a Gold medal for achieving over 38.00 points on Level 1, while Helen earned Silver by achieving over 37.00 points on Level 3.
MUSIC – QUEENSBURGH EISTEDDFOD
During the July holidays, the following pupils participated in the Queensburgh Music Eisteddfod, and achieved excellent results: Jordan Peter, Shaniae Maharaj, Sayug Moodley and Shraya Moodley. Congratulations on a very high standard of playing.
KZN MIDLANDS HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
Congratulations to Noël Lee and Cana Peek who participated in the KZN Midlands Hockey and their team came first in their age group.
SWIMMING – PRESTIGIOUS GALA
Well done to Noël Lee who participated in the Sports Prestige Gala and came second in 50 m breastroke and 100 m breastroke.
KZN SQUASH TOURNAMENT
Congratulations to Kiashen Brimiah, Thomas and Stephen Southway who participated in the BOYS KZN Squash Tournament during the holidays. Their team came fifth in the U13B age group.
Congratulations too go to Cana Peek, Noël Lee and Ana Chemaly who also participated in the GIRLS KZN Squash Tournament. Their team came fifth in the U13A age group.

GYMNASTICS – RHYTHMIC GYMNASTICS
Jaime-Lee Forster won a medal, trophy and certificate for achieving gold overall in the Ocean Rhythmic Gymnastics Invitation competition which included gymnasts from Johannesburg. She won Level 4 in rope, hoop, ball and free dance.

KZN MIDLANDS SCHOOLS HOCKEY
Congratulations to Cana Peek and Noël Lee who have been selected to attend the KZN Midlands Squad.
KZN GYMNASTICS
Helen Kroukam took part in the KZN Regional Level 3 Gymnastics competition on Saturday. She won overall, got a silver medal, a beam apparatus prize and has been selected for the KZN team (1 of 5) to compete in Bloemfontein at the end of this term.
She also took part in the PMB Gymnastics Academy Invitational competition and received a gold award certificate.
Well done to Michaela Sandalls who took part in the KZN Regional Level 1 Gymnastics competition on Saturday. She won a silver medal.
KZN NETBALL
Congratulations to Ana Chemaly who made the KZN U12 netball team at last Saturday’s trials, playing wing defence.
KZN SQUASH
Congratulations to Sayug Moodley, Thomas Southway, Kiashen Naidoo, Stephen Southway, Simon Krone (reserve), Noël Lee, Cana Peek and Ana Chemaly who all made it into the KZN Squash Team last Sunday at the final tournament.
GYMNASTICS – Coastal and Midlands Rythmic Gymnastics Competition
Well done to Jaime-Lee Forster who came first in her age group and won the whole competition with the highest mark in all levels.

CANOEING – SA SPRINTS
Congratulations to Epworth Co-educational Primary for coming 2nd in South Africa in the SA Schools Canoe Sprints! This was announced at the prize-giving held after the S.A. Sprints.
An important aspect of this achievement is that the whole team contributes, as they score points for every result they achieve. Well done to the whole Team!

KZN CANOE SPRINTS
Several Primary School children participated in the KZN Sprints during the holidays at Nagle Dam. They all did well and their paddling improved enormously.

SYNCHRONISED SWIMMING – SA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations to Rebecca McLeroth, Rachel Kroukam, Lina Kobayashi and Helen Kroukam for achieving so well as the Swimming South Africa Synchro Championships held in East London at the beginning of the holidays.
Amongst their other achievements, Lina Kobayashi came first in her solo event; Rachel Kroukam and Rebecca McLeroth came second in their duet and Helen Kroukam came second in her solo.
UMGUNGUNDLOVU SCHOOLS HOCKEY (GIRLS)
Cana Peek, Noël Lee, Minette Steyn and Shura Johnsen have made it through to the final round of Umgungundlovu Primary Schools hockey.
Todd Atterbury, Musa Ndlovu, Siya Gwala, Frances Makkink and James Patrick went to Pietermaritzburg North Ward Trials on Friday 29 April.
TERM 1 – 2011
KZN AQUATICS
Sabrina van Wyk participated in the above Aquatics Championship and won 5 medals in free relay, breaststroke and relay.
KID’S LIT QUIZ
Two teams from Epworth Co-educational Primary participated in the Pietermaritzburg round of the Kids’ Lit Quiz on Tuesday 15 February at Athlone School. They came second. Congratulations to the winning school, Pelham Senior Primary.
KZN SWIMMING TRIALS
Congratulations to Noël Lee who did well in the KZN trials. She came 2nd in two of the breastroke events and 3rd in the individual medley. She participated in the Level 2 National Gala in Bloemfontein and received a gold medal for the 50m breaststroke and a silver for the 200m breaststroke.
KZN SYNCHRONISED SWIMMING
Congratulations to Helen Kroukam, Hannah Munro, Cristina Pettit and Lina Kobayashi, who participated in the Level 1 KZN Synchronised Swimming in Durban recently. Rachel Kroukam and Rebecca McLeroth participated in Level 2.
KZN ATHLETICS
Well done to Cana Peek who came first in the KZN champs held in Durban on the weekend. At the SA Champs in Menlo Park, Cana placed 9th in the 800m track event.
SQUASH TOURNAMENT
Well done to Thomas Southway, Stephen Southway, Kiashen Brimiah and Noël Lee who participated in the Squash tournament held in Bloemfontein recently.
EPWORTH MUDMAN
Congratulations to all the participants who took part in the Epworth Mudman and Mudksippers recently. In spite of the heat, records were broken and everyone went all out to achieve their best.
KZN CANOE SPRINTS
James Horner raced in the KZN Sprint Canoe Championships and was placed 8th in the U14 age group in the K1 1000m and second in the K2 1000m. He also raced in the 3000m event and was placed 8th.
Cana Peek also participated in the U14 age group. She came 1st in the doubles 3000m and 1000m events and 2nd in the singles 3000m and 1000m events.
KZN SYNCHRONISED SWIMMING
The following swimmers have been selected to represent KZN at the SSA Regional Level 1 and 2 Synchronised Swimming Aquatic Championships in East London on 1 to 3 April 2011 :

EQUESTRIAN – SANEF
The 3rd Schools Equestrian Qualifier Show took place on the weekend of the 19th and 20th March at Canterbury Equestrian Centre in Pietermaritzburg. Six Epworth riders (Three from the Primary School) took part and made our school proud, earning a total of 2010 points for Epworth.

• Shannon Bromehead competed in Jumping, Equitation Showing classes, earning 468 Points for Epworth.
• Caitlyn Cox competed in Dressage and Showing classes, earning 293 Points for Epworth.
• Jillian Banche competed in Dressage and Showing classes, earning 284 Points for Epworth.
Loads of fun was had by participants and the team spirit was awesome.
